O`Brien has strong hand for Phoenix Stakes

Aidan O'Brien is responsible for 10 of the 23 two-year-olds still in the Waterford Wedgewood Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.

His team is headed by Coventry Stakes winner Statue Of Liberty, Hold That Tiger, successful in the Railway Stakes last time, and Great Pyramid. The latter is a full-brother to the brilliant Rock Of Gibraltar and made a winning debut at Cork on Monday.

O'Brien won the race last year with Johannesburg.

There are five British entries in the 168,800 euro Group One contest run over six furlongs. They are Night Speed, trained by Brian Meehan, Polar Force (Mick Channon), Revenue (Michael Bell), Tacitus (Richard Hannon) and Cassis (Jeremy Noseda).

The Group Two Royal Whip has also attracted six entries from the other side of the Irish Sea in Chancellor (Barry Hills), Foreign Affairs (Sir Mark Prescott), Highdown (Marcus Tregoning), Godolphin's Naheef (Saeed bin Suroor) and Mark Johnston's duo Simeon and Sir George Turner.

There is also a strong British contingent in the Group Three Phoenix Sprint Stakes over six furlongs, headed by David Nicholls' Darley July Cup second Bahamian Pirate. The others are John Dunlop's pair Invincible Spirit and Red Liason, Mister Cosmi (Johnston), Indian Prince (Meehan) and Three Points (bin Suroor).

On a very valuable card, the 48,750 euro Robert Griffin Debutante Stakes has three from England, Bijoux (Hannon), Buy The Sport (Meehan) and Havantadoubt (Jonathan Portman).
